Parking

When do I have to pay to park at Thompson’s Point?

Thompson’s Point is pay-to-park 24/7, weekends & holidays.

How do I go about paying to park?

Similar to the City of Portland, we partnered with the Passport Parking App! It makes it easy to pay to park or reload sessions directly from your phone. The app can send you reminders when your session is expiring and can save your frequently used zones for hassle free parking.

Not a smartphone user? We have parking kiosks available for use as well! They can take cash or card!

What is the Thompson’s Point Passport Parking Zone?

We have one zone for all of Campus, it’s 1213!

Darn it! I got a ticket, how do I pay it?

Easy! You can visit the RMC citation payment website here!

I’m coming to an event, how do I know if I need to pay or not?

Good question! You can reach out directly to the event organizers to find that out!

Tree of 40 Fruit

What the heck is it?

The Tree of 40 Fruit is a series of trees that grows forty different types of stone fruit including peaches, plums, apricots, nectarines, cherries, and almonds. Created through the process of grafting, the Tree of 40 Fruit blossom in variegated tones of pink, crimson and white in spring, and in summer bear a multitude of fruit. Primarily composed of heirloom and antique varieties, the Tree of 40 Fruit are a form of conservsation, preserving stone fruit varieties that are not commercially produced or available. The artist Sam Van Aken was featured in a TEDx Talk. Watch here!

When is the best time to see the tree blossom and/or with fruit on it?

Since all of the fruit on the trees ripen at different times, moments in July through October will be the best times to view that art in full color!

History

Cool place! What was it before it became the Thompson’s Point that it is today?

Thompson’s Point was a rail hub and repair shop. You can find a fabulous archive of old photos taken from the 1924 tax records on the Maine Memory Network website!

That pavilion, where did it come from? What was it?

The Depot Pavilion is the last remaining piece of the St. John’s Street Union Station, demolished in 1961. The demolition of that structure ushered in a new era of historic preservation in Portland, leading to the inception of Greater Portland Landmarks, an organization works to increase the public’s connection to greater Portland’s historic built environment by providing leadership, advocacy, educational publications, programs and resources. You can find more about them here!

Why do you charge 24/7 and on Sundays, and not just until 6pm like the rest of the city?

Our patterns of use are very different from those in the Old Port, and as a private peninsula with a variety of users all working together in a collaborative managed parking environment, we often see activity on Sundays, late into the evening, and at all hours. We have implemented a $10 “overnight rate” for those who, for whatever reason (we don’t judge) have to leave their vehicles for the night, so long as the vehicles are out by 7am the next morning.
