Thompson’s Point is pleased to announce that Rwanda Bean Coffee has just come aboard as its newest tenant.

Rwanda Bean will occupy the corner space in the historic Brick North building, next to Bissell Brothers Brewing Company, where they will operate their coffee roasting, packaging, subscription, and wholesaling businesses, offer retail coffee and cold brew sales, and host experiential programming and events.

Founded in 2013, Rwanda Bean is committed to the farmers of Rwanda who grow the beans that they roast and sell to customers all over the world. Through its 50% for Farmers program, Rwanda Bean gives a full 50% of its profits back to the farmers, and additionally they have helped to provide healthcare to 800 of the farmers in Rwanda and their families, and provided funds, technical expertise, and project management to assist in the construction of a children’s education center in Rwanda.

Says founder and CEO Mike Mwenedata, “To create a company that can help lead all Rwandans to a brighter future, I’ve kept my eyes on the lessons I first learned in my past. Our Fifty Percent for Farmers program was inspired by the belief I inherited from my parents that education and compassion have the power to create richer, fuller lives. The direct aid these funds provide to support the health, education, clean energy, and operational needs of our farmers and their communities does just that.”

Thompson’s Point co-owner and developer Jed Troubh notes that “Rwanda Bean is an exceptional company with a profound commitment to building community here and in Rwanda. We are proud to have them coming aboard with us at Thompson’s Point, and are truly impressed by the capable, mission-driven, passionate approach to their work that they bring to everything they do. We look forward to having them as part of the new neighborhood we are building, and we know that they will be exceptional partners and collaborators.”

A dynamic mixed-use neighborhood bringing together a wide variety of great Maine companies and family-focused arts, entertainment, and cultural offerings, Thompson’s Point’s tenants include the Children’s Museum and Theatre of Maine, Bissell Brothers Brewing Company, the International Cryptozoology Museum, Stroudwater Distillery, Big Room Studios, Color Me Mine, Halo at the Point, the Brick South Event Venue, and the Depot Pavilion – home of Rink at Thompson’s Point, the State Theatre Summer Concert Series, and a range of great programming (Moonlight Cinema, Makers’ Markets, Comedy Nights, and more).

As Rwanda Bean co-founder Ben Graffius explains, “Thompson’s Point is emerging as Portland’s great new neighborhood for arts, culture, food and drink, and entertainment, for people of all ages and all backgrounds. This is the perfect spot for Rwanda Bean to continue its growth, and we are truly excited to be part of the amazing community of businesses at the Point.”

They are in the process of permitting the former Cellardoor Winery space and hope to be open for business as soon as possible.
